Marriage Week 6

December 18 - December 24

The week leading up to Christmas is always full of energy - excitement for the upcoming festivities, the hustle and bustle of everyone running around getting those last minute errands accomplished, and all the joy and love wrapped up in the thoughtful moments and gifts to be given. This December is a little extra joyful because it’s our first married Christmas! Here’s the weekly marriage recap leading up to Christmas….

Breakfast Date

Kamil asked me out on a breakfast date for Friday morning! We haven’t done a breakfast date in a long while, so he thought it would be a nice way to connect… and it was! We tried out a new place, Rectory Cafe, which had lots of yummy GF treats including gluten free bread and a yummy chocolate almond tarte. Then we spent the morning running some errands!

Visited our friends Max and Amy in Virginia

A week ago Max had texted Kamil to see if he wanted to meet up in Virginia to watch the fight (they love to watch fighting/boxing). So on Saturday afternoon we drove up to Virginia to see them in their new apartment outside of Washington DC. We enjoyed a really good dinner at Sedona Taphouse (which had tons of GF options… like seriously almost everything on the menu was gluten free or could be made gluten free), then we went back to their place and popped some wine (and whiskey for the boys) and watched the fight. Well, Amy and I both tapped out before the fight was over and went to bed, but we tried at least, ha! Sunday morning we made breakfast, binged on some Below Deck, and then headed back to Carolina.

Baked Christmas Cookies

After years of baking in my Mom’s kitchen, this was the first year I got to bake in my own little kitchen with our own gadgets and tools! Years ago my mom bought me a hot pink Kitchenaid stand mixer and it’s finally out of storage and has found it’s home in our tiny little home! I decided to bake a Voigt family classic - peanut butter blossoms - and bring them up to New Jersey and share them with Kamil’s family for Christmas.

Christmas Movie Date Night

After baking cookies that evening I made Chicken Wild Rice soup for dinner. Kamil and I ate the warm hearty soup, watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Kamil’s first time watching the movie) by the candlelight and ended the night with the best hot chocolate + marshmallows for dessert!

Flying to Jersey

This was our first year doing Christmas together (last year when we were dating we did separate Christmas celebrations with our families). So on Tuesday 22nd we flew up to Newark to spend Christmas with his family. We even landed to some snow on the ground! That’s one way to get in the festive spirit.

First Polish Christmas

Well, this is my first Polish Christmas! In case you missed it, my husband is originally from Poland. His parents actually only speak Polish still, so I’m learning a whole new language…literally. His family celebrates on Christmas Eve with a big meal, lots of sweets, and even more spirits and sips! It’s Polish tradition to have a meatless Christmas Eve so his mom has been busy cooking all sorts of traditional Polish food like barszcz (beet soup), potato and cheese pierogi’s, fried fish (fish is okay, not considered meat), and tons of sweets like poppyseed cake. It’s definitely different not being with my parents, for almost 30 years I’ve never had to share a Christmas with anyone (Kamil was my first boyfriend) so it’s a happy thing to be with Kamil and my new family, but there is also an adjustment changing from old traditions. But to quote from a Hallmark movie - “Though you never want to forget your traditions, there is always room to make new ones”.
